Lead Backend Engineer, Marketplace Payments (Limited-time Relocation Bonus)

Vinted, UAB
6542 - 8842 €/m Gross
Occasional remote work possibility

Job Description

We're searching for a Lead Backend Engineer to join one of our engineering teams in the Marketplace Payments domain. Our goal is to build secure & reliable payments solutions for all Vinted buyers and sellers. You’ll collaborate with experienced colleagues to own the critical lifecycle of a user’s financial journey. This means architecting the systems that power a user’s first sale and balance activation, ensuring seamless payment account creation across multiple PSPs. You will lead the charge in navigating the complexities of KYC/KYB and identity verification within an environment of ever-changing regulatory requirements. You and the team will drive the high-stakes execution of user migrations between different PSPs and payment licenses, all while maintaining the scalable, resilient core platform that ensures smooth payment account lifecycle for the entire Vinted Marketplace.

This is a fast-paced environment at the beginning of our journey, so we embrace uncertainty. We're constantly building new services and evolving existing ones, with experimentation being a key. We balance the "fail fast" principle to avoid analysis-paralysis, but we also take the time to understand the benefits of different alternatives before diving in. We're not afraid to make mistakes. We learn from them.

  • Work in a team of 5-8 engineers, engineering manager, product manager and decision scientist.
  • Apply Agile and Lean principles in your work. We don't rigidly adhere to a single framework. We view Scrum, Kanban, and other methodologies as tools, selecting the most beneficial one for the team to achieve its goals.
  • Collaborate with other developers through GitHub pull requests and code reviews. Our pull requests move fast: time to first review is up to 5 min, average pull request cycle time (from open to merge) is up to 2 hours.
  • Use AI tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and others to improve your code.
  • See your code to affect millions of users almost instantly. Our main branch gets rolled out straight to production on each merge. With deployments many times per day.
  • Work with diverse tech stack, including: languages: Ruby; infrastructure: AWS and on-premise; databases/storage: MySQL, Elasticsearch, Redis; workflow orchestration: Temporal; monitoring/observability: Prometheus, Grafana. We don't expect you to be familiar with all of them beforehand, but we expect you will be excited to learn them fast.
  • Write unit tests for all of the code you write and contribute to integration and e2e test writing and its usage.
  • Take ownership of critical alerts and business metrics for your team to ensure our services achieve 99.99% availability.
  • You will participate in on-call rotations to ensure our product performs well.

Requirements

  • You're eager to master new technologies and concepts, driven by a strong passion for technology and a "can-do" attitude, always ready to embrace new challenges and grow as a specialist.
  • You think practically, choosing the best solutions while avoiding over-engineering. Your love for fixing things is driven by a deep desire to understand how they work.
  • You have solid backend engineering skills, familiarity with Ruby is beneficial but not required, and you balance immediate needs with long-term stability in your strategic decisions.
  • You prioritize collective success, actively deepening your expertise, sharing knowledge, and upholding best engineering practices. Strong communication skills enable you to collaborate effectively with cross-domain teams and non-technical stakeholders.
  • You have a deep understanding and experience of building the complex systems and can strategically navigate how different components interact, guiding architectural decisions.
  • Your mentorship leaves a lasting impact, empowering others to excel and grow by sharing deep technical insights and fostering a culture of knowledge exchange.
  • You excel at aligning teams from different functional areas, ensuring cohesive collaboration to drive impactful outcomes.
  • You identify opportunities for innovation and efficiency, leveraging new technologies to enhance capabilities.
  • You effectively lead significant technical transformations within the organization, advocating for necessary changes while ensuring alignment with broader business strategies.
